Introduction
The TRG is a sniper rifle of Finnish origin. It was developed in the mid 1980's by Sako. Unlike many sniper rifles at the time it was developed from the ground up as a tactical rifle. The Sako TRG series is marketed in the USA by Beretta, but are not produced by Beretta.
Design
The TRG is a bolt action sniper rifle using the proprietary TRG action. The heavy cold hammer forged barrel features a chrome moly coating and is free floating. The TRG comes in a variety of calibers. The Magnum models feature a slightly longer barrel and a much larger muzzle brake. For the first decade a plastic chassis was used. In 1999 the chassis has been updated making it more ergonomic and better suited for military use. Recently a folding stock was introduced. It hinges behing the more pronounced pistol grip and is slightly heavier.
Firepower
The TRG series fires the 7.62x51mm NATO round from a 10 round magazine, the .300 Winchester Magnum from a 7 round magazine or the .338 Lapua from a 5 round magazine. With proper ammunition 0.5 MOA accuracy can be achieved. The maximum effective range is 800 m for 7.62x51mm, 1.100 m for .300 and 1.500 m for .338.
Users
The early models were very popular among police tactical units and counter terrorist units. Since the introduction of the new stocks the weapon has also been picked up for military use. The TRG series are common in Europe and have been sold all over the world.
TRG-21
The TRG-21 is the original TRG model. It is a bolt action rifle that fires the 7.62x51mm round from 10 round magazines. The TRG-21 features a heavy free floating barrel and has a plastic chassis with adjustable cheek piece.
